Project Overview

Simons Group were appointed to refurbish the Waterside Shopping Centre, a large retail unit in Lincoln City Centre, with restricted access to the building due to the adjacent canal. The refurbishment project required a new three-storey atrium with escalators and an elevator in the centre of the retail unit.

Our Solution

Waldeck were appointed as Structural Engineers for the refurbishment of the Waterside Shopping Centre in Lincoln. By summer 2014, the shopping centre had undergone a transformation, with a new three-storey atrium having been built, which now features new escalators and an elevator.

The original atrium was filled in and turned into multiple flagship retail stores such as H&M and Next. There was also a significant change to the food court, which was moved from the upper levels of the shopping centre to the ground floor, in an open plan layout which includes coffee shops and fast food restaurants.

Client Comment

Waldeck’s work on the project was lauded by main contractor Simons Group Director, John Hallam, praising Waldeck’s contributions to the project:

“Considering the complexities of the existing structure and its constraints, Waldeck worked effectively with the architect and ourselves providing innovative solutions to problems. Their can-do attitude was evident throughout the course of the project and the team demonstrated excellent co-ordination and communication throughout.”
