What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is described as a collection of technologies that allow machines to sense, comprehend, act and learn.
This collection of technologies is no longer a futuristic concept, it is not a far-fetched notion resigned to our imaginations, it is a reality, and something that many enterprises and markets are beginning to experience and reap benefit from at an accelerating rate.
AI is creating simulated intelligence in machines that have the ability to teach themselves. These machines have been programmed to mimic human action and rational thought, which is transforming and disrupting traditional attitudes and routines in work and in daily life.
Machine Learning is an AI technology that provides systems with the ability to learn without being programmed. Integrated analytics provide a basis on which data sets can be harnessed by algorithms to adapt and improve their performance.
Backed by UK Government, and our own Research & Development (R&D) funding, Waldeck have been making significant progress with AI for both new build assets (i.e. capital projects) and existing built assets and infrastructures. We are implementing Machine Learning technology and bespoke API solutions to enhance and expand solutions for Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) projects and also, outputs from our Data Capture and Digital Surveying services in an intelligent, analytical, data-centric way.

Waldeck were early adopters of Building Information Modelling (BIM) a decade ago, then an effective and structured set of processes evolved around data and programming began to bring about efficiencies and maximise capability and quality in terms of deliverable outputs. Evolution and development has continued ever since, which coupled with Waldeck’s bespoke approach to projects, now sees us exploring numerous avenues where we can apply our understanding of open digital formats for coding and ‘data mining’ into Machine Learning techniques; to train machines to automate tasks.
We have also applied machine learning successfully to a number of areas of mainstream engineering design, scheduling and quantification for building and infrastructure projects. These developments are being integrated into Waldeck’s Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) offering and gradually tested and scaled.
For existing asset owners, our work so far already paves the way for a client’s ability to instigate efficient and timely data driven predictive maintenance or intervention, long before a failure situation might occur. This is important for clients with business critical assets, those operating in highly regulated industries or with ‘intelligent client’ obligations
Similarly, Waldeck’s data capture specialists are using AI to create smarter construction solutions through the use of drones surveying sites, photogrammetry, point cloud, GIS, creating an intelligent 3D live as-built scenario and extracting data to check compliance, also to plan and quantify construction activities. A process which typically took weeks, can now be completed in hours.
Waldeck’s data capture specialists, along with academic and industry collaborative partners are already using AI to automate the creation of smarter CAPEX and OPEX workflows on sites across the UK for some of our blue-chip logistics, transport, property and infrastructure clients.
These new technologies are fundamental to Reality Computing; automating and speeding up the Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) and assurance process for new build projects, to solve problems and execute tasks with greater speed and accuracy, resulting in increased productivity, safety, quality and scheduling.
Our experts now readily leverage Artificial Intelligence in our workflows for asset capture, recognition and classification and have several other areas of application under Research and Development (R&D), which will bring further advantages to both our consultancy and our clients. In our R&D lab we are using data collected to create rule sets and API (Application Programming Interfaces) for bespoke client requirements to solve problems, reduce risk and to be able to make assured and informed decisions accurately.
Post construction, we continue to work with our clients to develop intelligent integrated Facilities Management (FM) and Operational solutions to enhance optimise lifecycle performance.
